A pleural effusion is the build-up of excess fluid between the layers of tissue that line the lungs and chest cavity. Fluid can accumulate around the lungs due to poor pumping by the heart or by inflammation.
Symptoms include coughing, sharp chest pain or shortness of breath. Treatments include antibiotics, water pills (diuretics) and removal of the fluid.
