Uterine cancer begins in the uterus. Most uterine cancer begins in the layer of cells that form the lining (endometrium) of the uterus. Uterine cancers can be of two types: endometrial cancer (common) and uterine sarcoma (rare). Endometrial cancer can often be cured. Uterine sarcoma is often more aggressive and harder to treat.
Symptoms include vaginal bleeding after menopause and bleeding between periods. Risk factors include being overweight, starting periods at an early age, and delaying menopause.
Surgery to remove the uterus is the main treatment for most women with uterine cancer. Advanced cases may need therapy or chemotherapy or radiation.
